Captain Brian Kilby. Damn, that sounds good.
Not that I had a problem with being Kasidy's first officer, you understand. There's just something about having a ship that's all my own. I've noticed I'm looking at things differently this last week, since Captain Yates left for Bajor, seeing everything on board in a new light. Noticing different things, caring a little more about small things, since they reflect directly on my reputation now, not Kas's. I hope I'm not being too much of an ass to the crew. Stadi would tell me if I were, I think. Hope so.
Kas had a good rapport with both the DS9 folks and the Bajoran authorities. I hope the same will be true for me. Obviously I'm not Captain Sisko's wife, which changes the dynamic between the Xhosa and the authorities dramatically, but maybe it will be easier on all of us not to have that spotlight on us any more. Take that business with Rahl Anja back in the fall, for instance--
Or don't, actually. What is it with fantastically beautiful women and illegal, dangerous situations, anyway? All I ask is lots of business from the Bajorans, enough free time to have some fun, and you can leave me out of politics. You get enough politics to last the rest of your life, when you're ex-Maquis.
So, here's to the Xhosa. May her engines never fail and her spirit never die. And her captain never be quite as crazy as everyone thinks he is.
